Keeping or bringing a loved one home after death is legal in every state for bathing, dressing, private viewing, and ceremony as the family chooses. Religious observations, family gatherings, memorials, and private events are not under the jurisdiction of the states. Funeral homes may be good resources, but it is not legally necessary to hire one.

"Green burial" is the practice of burying a body without embalming in a biodegradable casket or shroud. It is far more earth friendly than traditional embalming and interment, or cremation.
In New Hampshire, town and other cemeteries may allow areas for green burial. Check with your cemetery of choice. It is also possible to have burials on your own property, subject to land use regulations.
